Tips for creating standout pumpkins this season

Melanie Jordin Orseske Marketing Director | Official Website

Pumpkin season has arrived, and with it comes the annual tradition of carving jack-o-lanterns. Whether you're participating in a local contest or simply enhancing your porch decor, there are several strategies to ensure your pumpkin stands out.

The first step is selecting the right pumpkin. When at the patch, choose one large enough to house a candle or light. A hollow sound when knocked indicates a good choice for carving. Stability is also key; check that the pumpkin doesn't wobble on a flat surface to facilitate symmetrical designs.

For precise lines, consider using a dry-erase marker instead of a permanent one. This allows for easy correction of mistakes. Alternatively, create a stencil and transfer your design with the marker.

Opening the pumpkin can be done in various ways beyond the traditional top cut. Cutting from the bottom allows placement over a ground-based candle for stability, while cutting a square in the back offers easy access without affecting your design.

To simplify seed removal and interior carving, an ice cream scooper can be effective, providing a smooth surface for further work.

Carving isn't the only option; pumpkins can also be decorated with etching, paint, craft supplies, or even used as vases for flowers. Creativity knows no bounds this season.

Engage friends and family in this festive activity with some music to enhance the experience. Happy decorating!
