Jon Smith, who has dedicated 19 years to Boone County High as a coach and physical education teacher, is retiring after a 30-year career in education. The school has expressed its gratitude for his dedication and contributions over the years.

Smith coached six different sports over his 32-year career. Prior to joining Boone High, he spent 25 years at Ockerman Middle School, where he coached over 500 basketball games. He also dedicated 23 years to coaching football, with 19 of those years at Boone. Alongside head coaches Owen Hauck and Rick Thompson, Smith helped lead the program to seven district titles, four regional titles, and a state semifinal appearance.

At Boone County High School, Smith coached girls and boys tennis, boys track and field, and girls golf. In addition to teaching physical education, he served as athletic director for five years and was a member of the school’s Title IX/Gender Equity Committee.

Smith was a decorated athlete at Boone County High School himself, earning Athlete of the Year honors in 1988. He played football for three years, helping his team achieve a 33-6 record and compete in two state championship games. In track and field, he competed in three state championships, finishing in the top six twice.
